Trump This: Panama Boasts the Largest Building in the Region

The 72-storey building with the sail silhouette overlooks the Panama Bay. It gives the city already known as “little Dubai” an even more “Dubai-esque” feel, inevitably calling to mind the world-famous Burj Al Arab. “The striking architecture alone is something that has never been seen before in Latin America,” says Roger Khafif, who proposed the project to Trump. Khafif’s company, Grupo K, is billed as the project’s developer while Trump Hotel Collection is hotel operator. The hotel will open its doors this month. It’s the Trump Collection’s first venture outside the U.S. Trump these numbers: With 2.7 million square feet of total gross area, this is the largest property in Latin America At 290 meters high, the Trump Ocean Club is also one of the tallest buildings in Latin America It boasts 18,500 tons of steel reinforcement and 123,000 cubic meters of total concrete…enough to build five 50-floor buildings. The project also used 5,000,000 feet of cable…enough to line the roads from New York City to St. Louis, Missouri. It will have taken an estimated 10,000,000 man-hours and 2,500 laborers to build by the time it is completed. Featuring some 1,000 units between residences, bay lofts and hotel guestrooms, the hotel boasts an array of amenities, including two floors of boutiques and shops, multiple restaurants, a pool deck and spa, 16,000 square feet of meeting space and a private beach club on nearby Viveros Island. Condos in the project are in the $400,000 and up range, though you might find resales available for far less (advertised locally). For example, one local listing offers a studio-size unit, about 530 square feet, for $210,000. Units for sale at such low prices were probably bought by speculators hoping to flip the properties soon. As the project completion has been delayed—the development broke ground in 2006—some buyers are now desperate to sell. Editor’s note: Jessica recently sat down to talk with Donald Trump Jr. Along with brother Eric Trump, he was in Panama City to promote the Trump Ocean Club. Eric dished on doing business in Panama and the increasing number of expats retiring there. Check out the video here. By the way…if you’re after bargain property in Panama, don’t worry. Properties like the Trump Ocean Club make up part of Panama’s luxury real estate market. The bargain property market is still going strong, with attractive apartments in convenient locations in Panama City still available aplenty in the under-$150,000 range. Read more here.

Trump opens 70-story luxury hotel in Panama, the tallest building in Latin America

The sail-shaped structure, soaring 284 meters into the sky, is a resort and residential complex that joins the real estate boom in Panama City. Panamanian president Ricardo Martinelli and top officials were present at the ceremony. “I want to thank Donald Trump for coming to Panama to invest in Panama and Panamanians for this opportunity to host one of the most important and beautiful buildings,” said President Ricardo Martinelli, adding that “I'm sure it's going to be on many postcards.” The Trump Ocean Club reflects “the modern sensibility of the new generation of luxury travel,” the company said in an invitation to the inauguration of the resort, where the cheapest room costs 300 USD per night and homes sell for 250,000 to 1 million USD. With an investment of 430 million USD, the resort designed by Colombian architecture firm Arias Serna Saravia is home to 47 suites, 37 elevators, a spa, marina, casino and an island with a private beach. It also boasts a 900-square-meter terrace with an oceanfront pool, personalized butler service and a convention centre stretched across 4,200 square meters. Donald Trump said that the inauguration of the hotel anticipates further investments as the region’s economies continue to show strong growth, although he did not anticipate names of countries. “I see this as a great springboard to the rest of Latin America,” Trump said. “There's strong interest in the Trump brand there”. The Trump chain has hotels in US cities like New York, Chicago and Las Vegas and is currently building another in Toronto in Canada.

TRUMP COMES TO PANAMA

July 6 marked Trump Hotel Connection’s first departure from U.S. soil with the long-awaited opening of Trump Ocean Club International Hotel & Tower Panama. Shaped like a massive sail overlooking Panama Bay, the 70-story Trump Ocean Club International Hotel & Tower Panama is poised to become one of Latin America’s newest landmark properties. Work on the first five-star development in the country started in 2006, with developer Newland International Properties Corp. overseeing the work. Being the largest property in Latin America—occupying a total of 2.7 million square feet of gross area—Trump Ocean Club is also the tallest, going up to 290 meters high. The $400 million massive project called for 123,000 cubic meters of concrete (enough to build five 50-story buildings), 18,500 tons of steel reinforcement and approximately 2,500 laborers working at peak of construction. The end result is a luxury real estate community, located in Panama City’s most desired neighborhood, Punta Pacifica, consisting of 1004 well-appointed units, out of which are 369 condo hotel rooms. Its convenient location places the Trump Ocean Club right next to Punta Pacifica’s sophisticated shops and nightlife, minutes away from the financial district—10 minutes from the International Banking center—and in close proximity to the international airport. The development includes 635 residences and bay lofts that have been fully equipped with furniture designed by Miami-based Adriana Hoyos. Prices range from $400,000 for a studio to just over $1 million for a 3-bedroom unit. Every unit comes with a private balcony with Pacific views, commercial-style stainless steel appliances, granite counters, custom cabinetry and frameless walk-in showers. As to the amenities, the Trump Ocean Club has been designed to satisfy the needs of residents and travelers alike, featuring a large wellness spa, oversized infinity pool and outdoor sundeck, upscale boutiques and shops, multiple restaurants, a casino, and a state-of-the-art business center. The property also includes a yacht club and a beach club situated on a private island. A full hotel-style array of concierge services is also available, including valet parking and bellmen for guests and owners. International architect Arias Serna Saravia provided the unique architecture of the building, whose arches begin on the 14th floor and rise to the 70th level. Every aspect of the tower has been designed to showcase the direct ocean views.
